The remainder of the book examines aspects of brain function - vision, perception, language, memory, emotion, and consciousness - that are more directly relevant to how the brain creates mind. It is an excellent handbook for the layperson who wants to develop a better understanding of the brain.

This book is authored by the pioneer of Auditory Integration Training (AIT) in which he clearly and simply describes the auditory system of brain function. He goes on to outline disorders which may benefit from AIT, as well as what the treatment consists of. Although this book is out of print, it is worth reading if you are able to locate it.

Drawing on anthropology, evolutionary biology, linguistics, and the neurosciences, Calvin also considers how a more intelligent brain developed using slow biological improvements over the last few million years. Although the author is a theoretical neurophysiologist, he writes in lay language which readers will appreciate.

This is an excellent book for the beginner’s introduction to the brain. Developed by neurosurgeons, it provides an excellent overview of the major structures and pathways of the nervous system. As with all of the books in this series, learning is reinforced by coloring the drawings.
