FITTING IN and HAVING FUN:
A video modeling tape for Children with HFA, Asperger’s Syndrome and Other Nonverbal Learning Disorders

The video is geared toward high functioning, mainstreamed elementary school-aged children. It breaks down complex social interactions by showing the consequences, both positive and negative, attached to how the child interacts with others and how they choose to respond in social situations.  It will make them aware of other people’s perspectives in the exchange by showing what each person is thinking during the social interaction. The tape highlights what they can do differently to affect a better outcome. Watching the children on this tape will help them to recognize and hold a picture in their mind of successful social exchanges.  This can help them come closer to duplicating it fluidly in their own personal interactions.

IT'S SO MUCH WORK TO BE YOUR FRIEND:
Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success

Drawing on three decades of experience in residential schools, Rick Lavoie provides powerful strategies for teaching friendship skills in the classroom, the homefront, and the community. First, you'll explore the causes and consequences of "social incompetence." Then, you'll gain field-tested advice on how to help children work through daily social struggles and go from being picked on and isolated to becoming accepted and involved.

STOP AND GO AHEAD WITH SUCCESS:
An Integrated Approach to Helping Children Develop Social Skills

The host of this video is Dr. Stephen Rothenberg, a psychologist with extensive experience in the field of social disabilities. He begins by explaining the components of social ability and how they affect relationships.

The program that he demonstrates is for a school setting. He emphasizes the critical need for ALL involved to be on the same page, and acting as "coaches" for the child, including bus drivers, lunch monitors, and so on. It is imperative to reinforce the positive skill (prosocial behavior) being worked on at the moment a situation occurs, and feedback should be presented in a nonjudgmental manner.

There is a demonstration of a meeting with the school principal and classroom teacher, and another with the parents explaining how the program will be implemented. The program in the classroom is modeled, showing students how the program works, followed by common incidents, which are acted out by children. Dr. Rothenberg also emphasizes that the most at-risk times are unstructured situations such as at recess, lunch, and on the bus.

An excellent integrated social skills programs for schools!

PROFILES OF SUCCESS: Successful Adults Achieving with Learning Disabilities

A very well-presented video, which covers a lot of material in 30 minutes. There is a brief but very clear description of various learning disabilities, and what helps individuals to be successful. Three individuals interviewed all have a reading disability, including one with a reading comprehension problem - a difficulty commonly encountered by NLD students. The host also has learning difficulties, is auditory and talkative, and selected a career compatible with his strengths.

The video provides excellent insight into the lives of successful adults with learning disabilities, who clearly struggled throughout their educational years.

A moving and inspirational video!
